New Release Kindle Unlimited Shane's Bride by Kathleen Ball #ASMSG #IARTG

Announcing the Release of
Shane's Bride
Mail Order Brides of Texas
By Kathleen Ball

Rescued from Indians, Cecily McGuinness suffers from horrendous nightmare; ones that have her running from her lodging into the woods. She’ll never be normal again and most of the townspeople look at her with disdain. All she ever wanted was a family and a place to call home.

Sheriff Shane O'Connor is tired of tracking Cecily down each time she takes flight. Finally he makes her an offer to keep his house and help turn it into a farm. Her past doesn’t taint her in his eyes. In fact he finds himself very attracted to her but keeps his distance. She’d suffered enough at the hands of Long Nose.

Amid cheating gamblers, old friends who unexpectedly show up and a fire, a closeness develops between them. Cecily believes she isn’t fit to be a wife anymore. Can Shane convince her heart and soul that she is indeed worthy of a great love?

Excerpt

He slowly walked to her, concern etched on his face. “I scared you, didn’t I? I’m sorry,” he said in a soft voice. Reaching out he cupped her shoulders in his big hands. “I want you to feel safe here. You were lost in thought.” He cocked his brow and slightly tilted his head as though waiting for an answer.

“I suppose I was.” She took a big step back, escaping his hands. His hands didn’t scare her as much as her reaction to them. A warm tingling feeling coursed through her body. Her heart continued to beat fast, but now it wasn’t out of fear.

Tuesday Tales- Great Free Stories- #Asmsg #IARTG

Welcome to Tuesday Tales!! This is the continuation of my new Mail Order Bride Novel- this week's word prompt is "nail"

Her stomach knotted and she felt the blood drain from her face. “Shannon. What do you mean? Do you know where he is? I’d like to talk to him.”

“He’s at the saloon. He owns it.”

Shannon jumped up. “Is it all right if I leave my bag with you? It appears  I have something to straighten out.”

Edith nodded. “Of course.”

She saw something akin to pity as she walked by the other customers. She lifted her chin and straightened her back as she marched down the walk to the saloon. The scarred, wooden, swinging doors were imposing as she stood looking at them trying to gather her courage. A saloon? There had to be a mistake.

The clinking of glass and the roar of laughter stopped when she stepped through the doors. She didn’t care if they stared, she had to locate Mr. Hardy and get an explanation.

“It’s not often we get a pretty little thing like you entering my place.”

Her heart dropped when she set eyes on the rotund man with dirty, greasy, dark hair and the look of the devil in his eyes.

“Are you John Hardy? The John Hardy who proposed marriage to me?” She held her breath wishing for him to say no.

“You must be my Shannon.” He smiled showing the lack of bottom teeth. He stepped in front of her and looked her up and down, his eyes lingering on her breasts. Putting his arm around her waist, he turned so they were both looking at the rag tag bunch in the saloon. “What do you think guys? A new one to add to my little doves.”

The crowd cheered as she tried to loosen his bruising grip. “Now look here, you misrepresented yourself. I’m not marrying you. I’m sure I can find another groom much better than you.”

“Better than me?” he asked his voice full of anger.

“Not better than you, I meant someone more suited to me is all.” Glancing out of the corner of her eye, she could tell he wasn’t buying it.

“Are you refusing to marry me?” His body tensed and he appeared mad enough to spit nails.

Not knowing what else to do she nodded and the next thing she knew she flew against the wall from being backhanded across her face. Quickly she lunged for the door, but John grabbed her by her hair and led her to the bar pinning the side of her face to the top.
She could hardly breathe and froze in fear. The pain was so horrific she screamed and screamed and before she knew it, she was thrown out the swinging doors into the street, landing in the dirt street.

John followed and laughed. “No one will want you now. You might as well get inside before everyone sees how hideous you are.”

Reaching up she touched her throbbing painful cheek and felt the blood before she brought her hand in front of her to confirm it. He’d slashed her face with the knife he held in his hand. The pain almost blinded her as spots crowded her eyes but she held on. “I’d rather be dead than be with you.” Her voice trembled as she tried to pretend she wasn’t scared.

John growled and stepped forward. “I can arrange that for you.” His dark eyes flashed at her and she believed him capable of killing.

The world seemed eerily quiet as she pushed herself up from the hard packed dirt, only to fall back down. Tears filled her eyes, as she looked around. There stood the women who were just in the mercantile, staring with their eyes full of fright. She’d get no assistance from them.

John Hardy stepped into the street and laughed while he gestured for two men to pick her up. “Come on, honey, it’s time for our honeymoon.”

She heard the clomping of hooves and the turn of wagon wheels behind her but it didn’t stop to help her either. By this time there were men standing with the group of women and she tried to plead with her eyes but they glanced away.

The two men grabbed at her getting ready to haul her back into the saloon when there was a loud cocking of a gun.

“Put her down.” The man threatened.

John stepped forward, thrusting out his chest. “Listen, Cinders, this is none of your business. It’d be in your best interest to leave things be.”

Shannon blacked out.

Free reads all with the word prompt "catch" Tuesday Tales! #ASMSG #IARTG Dont Miss Out

Welcome to Tuesday Tales- this week the word is catch

“Why do you keep insisting I’m your Ma? You know it’s not true.” She tried to keep her voice gentle but she wasn’t feeling so nice now. She’d been at it for at least a quarter hour but Brian wouldn’t budge.

Crossing her arms in front of her, she tapped her foot. “You’re afraid of this Solomon guy I get it. It’s understandable but you can’t go around calling me your ma. I’ve never been married for Pete’s sake. Patrick didn’t think too highly of me before you came along and now he thinks I’m an awful mother on top of it all. I don’t know what to do or say.”

Brian refused to look at her. He kept his gaze on the floor, barely blinking as though he didn’t hear her.

“Brian? Answer me please.”

The door opened and Patrick came in with a rush of cold air. “He has no respect for you. He’d answer you if he did. Can’t say I blame him.” He set a pail of water on the floor then walked to the fireplace and dropped the wood beside it. He took off his winter gear and his brow arched when he finally noticed her glare.

“I’m only telling you the truth of things.”

“You wouldn’t know the truth if it was right in front of you. How far is it to town did you say?” She couldn’t stay anywhere near Patrick and his judgmental gazes anymore.

“A couple days by horse, maybe a week walking.”
She huffed and put breakfast on the table. “You have laid in a lot of supplies.”

“Living up here, I get snowed in.” He sat down and Brian quickly followed suit.

She waiting for Patrick to offer her the chair but the offer never came. So much for him being any type of gentleman. “We seem to be one chair short.”

“Never had a need for more than two.” He helped himself to a biscuit, bit into it and smiled. “You’re a fair cook.”

Ignoring him, she filled a plate and sat on the bed. She had to admit it was the best food she’s had in a good while. Her ability to cook over a fire came in handy. “Do you think there is any way I can catch up to the wagon train? I’d like to get back what’s mine.”

He cocked his head and gave her a sad smile. “No, lass. Either they are still traveling or if caught in the snow, they could be anywhere. There is no guarantee they’ll survive. Your group must have gotten a late start and with the early winter they may not make it.”

His words saddened her. She’d made good friends who turned against her, but she would never wish them harm. The wind howled loudly. “We left early enough. The group was full of complainers and we didn’t get very far before someone insisted we stop and rest. My parents were concerned but the wagon master, Chigger Graham didn’t seem to care.”

“Chigger? That’s a whole different story. He’s been known to rob people and ride off. Bet he’s sitting in a nice warm cabin somewhere in these mountains right now. The murdering Bast—”

“Language.”

“What?”

“There is an impressionable child here and you need to watch your language.”

His jaw dropped, tempting her to laugh.

“It’s not the first time he’s done something like this. Did most of the folks already have property bought?”

A chill went through her. “Yes, why?”

“Aw Hel..Heck. There is no property. He took your money and handed out phony deeds.”

A lump formed in her throat. “He had a map. We picked our property. It was all official.”

“I’m sorry, lass. It’s a hard blow and I bet that feller Stinky was in on it too.”

Tears formed in her eyes and she turned her head away. She’d hoped to find her property and confront Stinky Sullivan. They’d been taken for everything they had including lives. If only her papa hadn’t been so keen on going out west. The tears began to flow down her face. How? Why?

Brian took the plate from her hands and set it on the bed. He climbed onto her lap and hugged her. Don’t cry Ma. I hate it when you cry.”
